Behavioral Support
Individual Counseling
Structured one-to-one support sessions that build quit plans and coping skills.
What it is
Individual counseling is structured behavioral support delivered by a trained professional, in person, by phone or online, usually across several sessions.
How it works
Counseling helps people prepare a quit date, identify personal triggers, practice coping strategies and solve problems during the attempt, and provides accountability.
Evidence
Cochrane reviews find that behavioral support, including individual counseling, increases quit rates, and that more intensive support tends to work better. Combining counseling with medication is more effective than either alone.

Reported community experiences
Community reports describe counseling as helpful for structure and accountability, though availability and cost vary. Community records are being compiled in the Experience Database.
Practical considerations
- Ask about free local services: many countries fund stop-smoking services
- Combine with medication if appropriate
- Prepare to discuss your smoking patterns honestly
Limitations
Effect depends on the quality and intensity of the service. Access varies widely by country and region.
Community-reported experiences are de-identified individual accounts and do not constitute scientific evidence or medical advice.
