Quitlines (Telephone Support)

Free or low-cost telephone coaching services available in many countries, such as 1-800-QUIT-NOW in the US.

What it is

Quitlines are telephone-based stop-smoking services providing coaching, quit planning and sometimes free nicotine replacement, often at no cost to the caller.

How it works

Trained counselors provide structured support over several calls, helping with quit dates, withdrawal, cravings and relapse prevention.

Evidence

Cochrane reviews find that telephone counseling, especially proactive quitline support, increases quit success. Quitlines are a core component of WHO-recommended cessation support.

Evidence strength: Strong

Reported community experiences

Community reports describe quitlines as accessible and practical, especially for people who cannot attend in-person services. Community records are being compiled in the Experience Database.

Practical considerations

  • US: 1-800-QUIT-NOW; UK: NHS stop smoking services; many countries have national quitlines
  • Call early in the quit attempt rather than after relapse
  • Ask about free NRT programs

Limitations

Service quality and availability differ by country. Quitlines are support, not a treatment by themselves.

Community-reported experiences are de-identified individual accounts and do not constitute scientific evidence or medical advice.
